WPTW provides certification for the 3 key roles:

  • Wellsite Permit Holder (WPH)
  • Operating Company Representative (OCR)
  • Wellsite Permit Authority (WPA)

Other roles

There are other ‘roles’ in the System, but there is no formal ‘training and certification’ required for those roles. For example:

  • Work Party members will complete the work being authorised by the permit, under supervision from the WPH. There is no formal WPTW certification for Work Party members, however they should be informed of requirements in their Site Safety Inductions when they come on site.
  • Wellsite Permit Coordinator (WPC) is a specialist role that applies only to Complex SIMOPS operations where there are multiple wellsites being managed at the same time by different WPAs. The Operating Company will typically employ a ‘Program Manager’ to oversee and coordinate those operations. We recommend that this person holds OCR certification, but there is no formal requirement.
  • Work Precautions Verifier (WPV) is not technically a ‘role’ but an activity delegated by the WPA to ensure that all documented Work Precautions have been implemented before the permit is issued. The WPA is responsible for the verification of all controls, so they need to be confident that the nominated person understands the nature and intent of the Work Precautions and will be careful in checking that they are properly implemented. There is no formal training for WPV.

While there is no training required to be a Work Party member, there can be problems for small crews if only one person is WPH certified and that person is not available to control the work. Under the WPTW System, the Work Party must be supervised by a certified WPH. It might be a good idea to have a few people in the crew trained in WPH to make sure the work can continue.

The Association can provide standard information on the Wellsite System for insertion into Site Safety Induction presentations if required. This provides an overview of the System, the key roles, and the responsibilities of Work Party Members when working under WPTW.
