Productive downtime can be costly for wellsite operations.
During our recent Wellsite Digital Beta Field Trials, and discussions with users, the Association has identified a range of confusions about WPTW that can contribute to System overuse and foster tick and flick approaches to managing higher risk work with resultant reductions in both productivity and safety.
This has resulted in several initiatives to support Member companies in the best use of WPTW, including standardised online training, distribution of FAQ information on our web site, and ongoing reviews of the system to identify where improvements and clarifications can be made.
User feedback indicated that an effective strategy would also be for the WPTWA to provide access to experienced industry personnel, who are both field safety operatives and highly knowledgeable in the WPTW system, to provide coaching to crews in the field. The feedback suggested this ‘face-to-face’ approach is more likely to immediately increase the proper and effective use of WPTW and therefore contribute to increasing productive efficiency and workplace safety.
By engaging the whole field team and providing ‘real-time’ coaching rather than traditional ‘training’, our WPTW specialists can better respond to the team’s specific site-based issues and work practices and provide real-time practical answers.
Infield Coaching
The activities of the “coach” would be dependent on the specific client and site needs, however by way of example the coach may arrive at the wellsite and, after introductions, undertake a review of current and archived WPTW forms and their attachments. These are used to develop a picture of current system use and highlight possible areas of focus.
Following the initial site review, coaching of all role holders on their general responsibilities and through discussion and observations, identify specific opportunities for improvement. It is expected the areas of coaching may include:
- How the WPTW life cycle assists in establishing and maintaining safe working conditions on a wellsite
- When to use the WPTW system
- Requirements for Scope, Work Precautions and Ongoing Controls for any WPTW
- Assisting OCRs in understanding how to fulfil their responsibilities within the WPTW system
- How to reduce the frequency of issuing permits by using existing and proven risk control tools
- How and when required Work Precautions should be implemented for particular WPTW activities
- How to conduct efficient, robust, practical, Permit Briefings with all Work Party members
- Observing and assisting role holders to maintain a safe working environment for the duration of the WPTW activity
- Responsibilities when closing out a WPTW
- Feedback and advice on observations to service provider’s upper management if required
