Time is Money
… and productive downtime can be costly for wellsite operations.
Since 2015 the Association has identified a range of misunderstandings about WPTW that often result in overuse of the System, and reductions in both productivity and safety outcomes.
This has resulted in a range of initiatives to support Member companies in the best use of WPTW, including more consistent control over training outcomes through standardised online training, distribution of FAQ information on our web site, and ongoing reviews of the system to identify where improvements and clarifications can be made.
A significant amount of telephone coaching occurs to assist Users through both the certification and recertification training, but this is limited to one-on-one assistance and is usually focused on completion of the assessment tasks.
User feedback has indicated that a far more effective strategy would be for the WPTWA to provide access to experienced industry personnel, who are both field safety operatives and highly knowledgeable in the WPTW system, to provide coaching to crews in the field. This is more likely to increase the proper and effective use of WPTW and therefore increase productive efficiency and workplace safety.
By engaging the whole field team, and providing ‘real-time’ coaching rather than meeting based ‘training’ our WPTW specialists can better respond to the team’s specific site-based issues and work practices.
Infield Coaching
The activities of the “coach” would be dependent on the specific client and site needs, but by way of example the coach may arrive at the wellsite and, after introductions, would undertake a review of current and archived WPTW forms and their attachments. These are used to develop a picture of current system use and highlight possible areas of focus.
Following the initial review, coaching of all role holders on their general responsibilities and through discussion, assessment and observations, specific opportunities for improvement will also be identified. It is expected the areas of coaching may include:
- How the WPTW life cycle establishes and maintains safe working conditions on a wellsite
- Requirements for Scope, Work Precautions and Ongoing Controls for any WPTW
- Assisting OCRs in understanding how to fulfil their responsibilities within the WPTW system
- How to reduce the frequency of issuing permits by using existing risk mitigation tools
- Required Work Precautions and how and when they should be implemented for particular WPTW activities
- How to conduct efficient, robust, practical, Permit Briefings with all Work Party members
- Observing and assisting role holders to maintain a safe working environment for the duration of the WPTW activity
- Responsibilities when closing out a WPTW
- Feedback and advice on observations to service provider’s upper management if required
