A Person Conducting A Business or Undertaking (PCBUs) main responsibility is to make sure that the workplace is safe and that anyone working in or visiting the workplace is not exposed to hazards or harmed by the work. This includes:
- Verifying work areas, machinery and equipment are kept in a safe condition.
- Organising ways of working safely.
- Providing information, instruction, training and supervision
- Validating that employees are aware of potential hazards.
- Consulting with personnel at the workplace.
- Providing supervision to ensure that employees are not exposed to hazards.
- Verifying equipment and materials are used, stored and disposed of safely.
Do these sound familiar? They should, as they are also several of the responsibilities of a Wellsite Permit Authority (WPA).
The WPA is essentially the PCBU for the wellsite and verifies that PCBU responsibilities are undertaken. The Wellsite Permit to Work (WPTW) system assists with the WPA undertaking PCBU responsibilities. WPTW assigns responsibility and supervision, provides instruction, assesses and communicates risk and verifies work areas are kept clean and safe.
